| Herb Caen "Tyrus Raymond Cobb was, many experts believe, the greatest baseball player in history. Maybe this incident explains why. About ten years ago, Ty agreed to play in a sandlot game. Playing first base for the opposing team was Lewis Lapham, son of the ex-mayor. His first time at bat, Cobb hit a tiny dribbler down third base-and the throw to Lapham had Ty beaten by a full stride.
But as he crossed the bag, Cobb hit Lapham's arm so hard Lapham dropped the ball. `Safe!' yelled the umpire. `Look, Ty,' grimaced Lewis as Cobb stood grinning on first base, `Take it easy. This is just a friendly game, y'know.' The grin disappeared from Cobb's face. When I play,' he snapped, `I play to win.' "A man begins cutting his wisdom teeth the first time he bites off more than he can chew. |
